Rescue in the BWCA
On Sept. 7, at 1:15 p.m., the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received notice of a distress signal from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, via a Garmin safety device. The GPS coordinates placed the spot of the distress west of Contest Lake, in the area of Stuart River portage. This area is northwest of Ely. Garmin informed the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office they had updated information and that the injured party had a possible broken leg.
St. Louis County Board considers property tax levy increase for 2026
The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2026 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $202,669,428. This is a 12.4 percent increase in the levy compared to last year, though the impact will be somewhat reduced by the county’s 7 percent increase in property tax base.


DNR recognizes conservation officers for lifesaving efforts
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division recently recognized three conservation officers for their lifesaving efforts over the last several months. Park Rapids-area CO Nick Baum, International Falls-area CO Curtis Simonson and Remer-area CO Corey Sura received lifesaving awards.

Trinity Lutheran to hold worship service at Little Fork Church
On Sunday, Sept. 14, at 9:30 a.m., Trinity Lutheran Church of Cook will be holding its annual Sunday morning worship at the Little Fork Church on the corner of Wein and Samuelson Road in Field Township. “We are gathering to worship at this picturesque Norwegian Lutheran church and remembering its importance in building and nurturing the faith of our pioneers as well as confessing our belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are grateful for Field Township for the beautiful care of the church and cemetery and for letting us gather in this holy space.”
