Body of canoeist recovered in BWCA

On May 10, at approximately 2:15 p.m., U.S. Forest Service employees reported to 911 that they had located a capsized canoe on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area north of Ely. Upon investigating further, the USFS employees located a deceased individual and their gear floating near the canoe. The deceased was wearing a life jacket. It is believed that the individual was on a solo canoe trip into the BWCA.

Orr City Council raises water rates by 5 percent

Orr’s City Council began their May 12 meeting with old business. Tabled from April was the suggestion of raising water rates by 5 percent for three consecutive years. Councilor John Jirik had asked for rates from other Northland communities for comparison, and Administrator Angela Fabish accommodated with nine. The issue became not whether to raise rates, but whether to three times. At Jirik’s suggestion, the council agreed to a one-year 5 percent raise and revisit the issue at that time.
