Cook VFW Post 1757 needs your help
The VFW in Cook was commissioned on April 30, 1939, by local veterans having served in a foreign war. Some of these brave men have familiar names: Aune, Hannine, Erickson, Arden, Beatty, Ongalo, Lofgren, Karni, Johnson. They served their country proudly and bravely, organized a post to gather and share with comrades the horrors and valiant things they had endured.

June might dry up even more
Meteorologist Dave Anderson My dad was a teacher at Lincoln, Kennedy and Washington schools in Ely nine months out of the year and worked in Dave Desannoy’s gravel pit near Tower the other three months. In the early ‘80s he taught me to run a backhoe and a bulldozer. I hope I can dust off those 45-yearold skills because I just got a deal on an old Cat D2 dozer. It should come in handy cutting some lanes on my property. Normally I would wait until the ground was frozen to do that because who wants to get four tons of steel beast buried in the mud of the Sax Zim bog? However, this June may be awfully dry, which might minimize that risk.

My Pal Al
During the last few years of The Depression, my dad got married and so did Allen Holmer’s dad. Al was born on Feb. 2, 1939, and I was born on July 15 the same year. When the war broke out, Allen’s dad and mom moved to Seattle where Ray joined the Coast Guard. Dad and Mom ended up in L.A where Dad bossed in the shipyards fixing Navy ships that had to be salvaged. After the war, most men returned home.

Memorial Day …Our Time to Remember and Honor those who gave their lives
Monday at 9:30 a.m. those who assembled at the Veterans River Bridge in Cook to remember and honor the men and women who were lost at sea protecting our country were welcomed by VFW members Commander Charlie Paradis and Assistant Commander Darrel Lindgren. Commander Paradis said our remembrances today include not only the Navy members who never received the honor of an official burial, but Marines, Air Force and all branches of service that lost members at sea.
