Minnesota DNR tree seedling sales opened Oct. 1
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ State Forest Nursery opened seedling sales for spring 2026 on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Landowners across Minnesota can order native, bareroot tree seedlings for their properties. Planting trees provides many benefits, including creating wildlife habitat, protecting soil and water, and supporting a healthy forest products economy.

The weather sure is hanging on and I can’t believe how nice this fall has been so far. I will take it as long as it lasts. I’ve been canning like crazy and more tomatoes coming out of my ears, but they are so sweet and delicious.

St. Louis County Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 5-11
Oct. 5-11 is National 4-H Week, and St. Louis County 4-H is celebrating the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community, and are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world.

It was another good week in Buyck with nice weather. We got some more rain, but we can always use that. The garden has really been doing well with this warm weather. How much longer is it going to stay in the 70s? Hopefully, for another week or so, but we’ll see what happens.

Teach a kid to hunt small game during Take a Kid Hunting Weekend
Getting youth outdoors in pursuit of squirrels, rabbits and other small game is the focus of Take a Kid Hunting Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 21. During the weekend, adult Minnesota residents accompanied by a youth younger than age 16 may hunt small game without a license, although they must comply with open seasons, limits and other regulations.
4-H Youth exhibit their best at the 2025 Minnesota State Fair
4-H youth from across Minnesota again showcased their learning in the 4-H Building at the Minnesota State Fair. Over 160 demonstrations were delivered and over 1,900 general exhibits were on display. In a continuation of the virtual state showcase format developed in 2020, over 110 of the general exhibits were judged virtually this year.
New Suicide Prevention Coalition seeks volunteers, hosts kick-off community gathering
Motivated by concerning trends and a desire to develop new solutions and supports, a new group is forming focused on preventing suicide on the Iron Range. The Suicide Prevention Coalition will host a kick-off meeting for the public on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 4-7 p.m. at the Mountain Iron Community Center.
