Two Cook women die in house fire in Beatty Township
The two women who died in a house fire in Beatty Township on July 17 have been identified as Raeann Marie Pry, 69, and Susan Patricia Hein, 67, both of Cook.
Lake Country Power line crews respond to another batch of storms early Sunday morning
Cohasset, MN – Another batch of thunderstorms hit Lake Country Power’s service area early Sunday morning, July 27. Since then, crews have restored electricity for more than 6,900 co-op members. As of Monday at 9:30 a.m., there are 80 members without service as crews continue working to restore service today.

2025 Loon Count
Every year, a certain designated Monday in July dawns under a level of apprehension among veteran loon counters. Will today be a ‘Go’? If it’s rainy or if the water’s really choppy, no clear loon sightings will be possible, and there will be no accurate count of Pairs, Singles, and Chicks. Plan B is always to reschedule and attempt the count two days hence.
8th District MSHS 2025 Scholarships announced
The 8th District Minnesota State Horticultural Society awarded eight scholarships for 2025 this year. Funds for the scholarships were provided by donations from various garden clubs, individuals and memorials. The scholarships were announced at the Spring meeting in May.
