North Woods varsity volleyball team wins season-opener

September 2 – Tonight, the North Woods varsity volleyball team beat the Bigfork Huskies in straight sets with a score of 25-7, 25-10, 25-7 for their first home game of the season. This brings their season record to 3-0. Coach Kaileen Redmond, assisted by Coach Lappi, Coach Sandberg, and Coach LaPatka, begins her second year as head coach after five years assisting Coach Olson.

There were a good number of student fans supporting the team after their first day back to school. This contributed to a feeling of celebration as the team’s five seniors were recognized on their last ‘first home game’ of their school careers.

As the seniors took the court, supported by their teammates, they rallied quickly after a shaky first point for a resounding win. All of the seniors contributed points for the victory with the play of the game going to Mya Goggleye. Mya received her first kill as a varsity player after many years of dedication to the volleyball program. Her favorite memory in all her years on the court was being able to join the varsity squad this year.

The Grizzlies’ JV and the 8th grade team also won in straight sets as the 7th grade team lost 1-2 coming within a few points of their opponents in their tie-break set.
