Buyck Area News

Kathy Weiand sent me the following exciting news: The Buyck Fire Department has received a grant from IRRRB through the State of Minnesota mineral tax bond to build a new fire hall. Lenci Enterprises in Virginia, Minn., won the bid to do the project. The garage portion of the construction should start in September. It will be at the same location. It’s been a labor of love that we have all been working on for 20 years. A big shout out to the Fire Dept. building committee for all of their hard work and for the community for their unending support. We are very grateful. And excited!

It was one chilly weekend after the warm week, but fall is in the air. They say frost tonight. I’m hoping it’s not going to do what they said it would last night and it only got down to 41 degrees. So let’s hope that’s what we get again.

On Sunday, the Women’s Golf League held their end-of-the-season tournament. It was an 18-hole step-aside format and as usual it went very well. It was pretty darn cold with 10- to 15-mile-an-hour winds and 54 degrees as the high that day. But we all had a great time with no rain, which was great. It rained all day Saturday to Sunday, which was much nicer, you could say. Here are the winners of the tournament: 1st Place – Cathy Erickson, Yvette Rutar and Jill Crain; 2nd Place – Mary Hoffman, Geri Hoffman and Lisa Anderson; 3rd Place – Melissa Rabas, Denyel Mathisen, Jen Whittemore and Kiley K; 4th Place – Patty Overbye, Stacy Will and Lori Brett. Longest Putt – Kiley K. Closest to The Pin – Geri Hoffman (first time all year!). Closest to the Line – Denyel Mathisen. There were seven skins with three going to the first-place team, one to the second-place team, one to the third-place team, and two to the fourth-place team. All and all it was a great day to play some golf. Can’t wait till next season.

Cribbage winner last week at the VRT was Scotty Rutar. Patty Overbye had high hand.

The garden is doing pretty darn good with lots of green beans coming — sometimes too much. Zucchini, cucumbers, peppers galore, and tomatoes are doing well. The first BLT of the season is the best sandwich with fresh tomatoes, which we had on Monday night. Cabbage is doing great — making sauerkraut and still more in the garden.

That will be it for this week. Any news you would like me to add, please give me a call. Keep smiling till next week.
